Background History

Thornrose Cemetery was created in 1849 and located in the heart of Staunton, Virginia.   It is known as one
the most beautiful cemeteries in the state of Virginia and contains the graves of over 1700 confederate
soldiers from the battlefields of Alleghany, McDowell, Cross Keys, Port Republic and Piedmont.   The
cemetery contains an Italian marble statue of a Confederate infantryman, rising 22 feet above the ground.
