Pennhurst Asylum -- Spring City, Pa. Black Raven Paranormal Feature Investigation -- September 2015 Background History Pennhurst Asylum, originally known as the Eastern Pennsylvania State Institution for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic was an institution for mentally and physically disabled individuals of Southeastern Pennsylvania.   Opened in 1908 and covering an area of 120 acres, it was one of the largest institutions of its kind in the state of Pennsylvania. Over 10,000 patients crossed through the doors into Pennhurst, residing in one of the many buildings in the school's network.   Overwhelmed parents dropped off their children who were mentally retarded or autistic, hoping the school would provide for them.   Sadly, many of these children were abandoned to become wards of the state.   While some patients could care for themselves, many more suffered from severe disabilities. As patients flowed in, the staff became overwhelmed.   The result was rampant abuse, neglect and horrific conditions. It is little wonder to the occurrence of such events given the history and trama associated with Pennhurst Asylum.
