Charleston, South Carolina

Background History

The Old Jail in Charleston was built in 1802 on the site of a former, hospital, poor house, and slave workhouse.   Some
of the more noteable former inmates to be housed here were serial killers John and Lavinia Fisher (1819-1820).   They
were accused and convicted of multiple counts of murder of travelers at the 'Six Mile House' just outside of Charleston.
It is reported that they still appear in the prison.   Pirates as well and civil war prisoners, both federal and confederate
were held captive in the jail. Slaves, murderers, traitors, and petty criminals were all also held, tortured, and finally
executed at the gallows here.   It is believed that as many as 10,000 people died on this property until 1939
when the property was abandoned.
