Burlington County Prison -- Mt. Holly, New Jersey

Black Raven Paranormal investigates Burlington Prison

Black Raven Paranormal Feature Investigation -- September 2013

Black Raven Paranormal would journey to Mt. Holly, New Jersey to investigate the historic
Burlington County Prison.   Perhaps known as the most haunted location in the state of New
Jersey, the prison has been investigated by a countless number of paranormal groups as
well as a prime time feature on Sci-fi's Ghost Hunters.

Background History

Built in 1811 by an architect named Robert Mills, the prison was one the country's finest and
considered state of art.   The prison operated from 1811 until its closing in 1966 and at the
time of its closing, it was the nation's longest active running prison.

Like many prisons of its time, there were a number of executions and violent deaths that took
place at the Burlington County Prison.   The most famous execution took place in 1830 and
involved a man named Joel Clough.   The 29 year old Clough was convicted of stabbing to
death a girl who had refused his romantic offers.   He is buried on the prison grounds
and believed to haunt the location.

The last execution to take place at Burlington County Prison was in March of 1906.   Two men,
Rufus Johnson and George Small, were executed a few months after their crime.   They were
convicted of murdering a woman in nearby Moorsetown.   It is strongly believed that they
too haunt the halls and cells of the Burlington County Prison.

Violent murders include that of a trustee and a guard during escape attempts on the lowest
level of the prison, this area is known to be very paranormally active.

Another area of extreme interest is the “dungeon”, or maximum-security cell.   It is located in the
center of the top floor.   Its purpose was to prevent escape by digging, to minimize communication
with criminals in the cell blocks.   This is where Joel Clough was incarcerated, an area known to be
a paranormal hotspot.   Paranormal activity reported from the staff and visitors include
disembodied voices, cold spots, apparitions, cells doors opening and closing.

To say the least, Black Raven Paranormal was very excited to investigate and tour the
Burlington County Prison.
